The game can be played by 2 to 5 players.
The game uses three standard 52-card decks. Jokers are optional; if jokers are included, they are wildcards.
The player to the dealer's right gets the first card (the "offered" or "choice" card). The dealer deals a hand of 21 cards counter-clockwise to each player. The remaining cards (known as stock cards) are kept face down in a stack. The top stock card is removed and placed face up; the player on the dealer's right picks it up to start the game.
Each player's turn has three phases: draw, meld, and discard.
At the beginning of a player's turn, they may draw a card from the top of the draw pile or the top of the discard pile. Only the top card of the discard pile may be drawn, and it cannot be
the card that is discarded at the end of the turn. If the draw pile is ever depleted , the discard pile is shuffled and turned over to form a new draw pile.
After drawing a card, the player may meld any number of cards from their hand. A meld is a set of three or more matching cards, such as tunnels, trials, sequences, or marriages. A tunnel is a set of three or more cards of the same rank and suit, such as 7 7 7. A trial is a set of three or more cards of the same rank, such as 7 7 7. A sequence is a set of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, such as 5 6 7. A marriage is a special sequence that consists of a king and a queen of the same suit, such as K Q. A marriage can be extended by adding more cards of the same suit in sequence, such as K Q J 10. A joker can be used as a wildcard to substitute any card in a meld.
A player may lay down their melds on the table in front of them, or add cards to their own or other players' existing melds. However, a player cannot rearrange or split the cards in any meld once they are laid down.
At the end of their turn, the player must discard one card from their hand and place it face up on top of the discard pile. The discarded card cannot be the same as the one drawn from the discard pile at the beginning of the turn.
The game ends when one player runs out of cards in their hand, or when there are no more cards left in the draw pile. The player who goes out first gets a bonus of 10 points.
The score for each player is calculated by adding up the points for all the cards in their melds, and subtracting the points for all the cards left in their hand. The points for each card are as follows: Ace = 1 point, 2 to 10 = face value, Jack = 11 points, Queen = 12 points, King = 13 points, Joker = 15 points. The points for each type of meld are as follows: Tunnel = double the points of the cards in the set, Trial = single the points of the cards in the set, Sequence = single the points of the cards in the set, Marriage = single the points of the king and queen plus 10 bonus points.
The player with the highest score at the end of the game wins.
